Many religious people came to Jesus for a “sign” from above (as is also the case in our times). But Jesus stressed that the only sign that shall be given, was the sign of Jonah the prophet. While Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, he cried for help from the depth of Sheol.  Jesus – the Son of Man, who was God manifested in the flesh, then emptied Himself and became human – spent three days and three nights in the heart of the earth; to do what? He descended into the lower parts of the earth, to lead captivity captive! He went and made proclamation to those spirits held captive since the days of Noah. For this reason, God also highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY  knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and EVERY  tongue will confess that HE is Lord to the glory of God the Father. He holds the keys of death and of Hades!
