The Gospel of Mark (Part 14)

In Mark 5:1–20, we fine one of the most intense and revealing stories in the Gospel — the encounter between Jesus and the demon-possessed man from the Gadarenes. The unnamed man, who was possessed by a legion of demons, was cut off from society because of his condition and living on the outskirts of town. Yet it was this rejected and tormented man that Jesus crossed the sea to meet.

This story reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. It confronts the evil we sense in the world — corruption, suffering, and spiritual oppression — and affirms that Christ alone has the authority to bring true freedom. While full possession like this may be rare, many still suffer under demonic oppression in subtler forms: isolation, unrelenting despair, addictions, and destructive thoughts. We must not trivialize or ignore spiritual realities simply because they are uncomfortable or hard to explain. Jesus still delivers, and He still restores.
