In Mark 10:1–12, Jesus responds to a deliberate confrontation from the Pharisees on the issue of divorce. Rather than being drawn into their attempt to trap Him in the debate between the strict (Shammai) and lenient (Hillel) interpretations of Deuteronomy 24:1, He reframes the conversation entirely. Jesus distinguishes between Moses’ concession, given because of human hardness of heart, and God’s original design for marriage in Genesis. By quoting from Genesis, He provides a restorative vision of marriage as God intended it from the beginning. From this, we are able to draw many insightful encouragements that help us view marriage as holy and sacred.
