Speaker: Justus Swart

In Mark 10:13–16, we see a powerful and comforting picture of Jesus’ heart toward children, set against the backdrop of His earlier hard teachings on sin and divorce. As the disciples attempt to turn children away, Jesus responds with indignation, declaring that the kingdom of God belongs to such as these, revealing both His deep care for children and a broader theological truth. This passage leads us to consider the hope we have for babies and young children who die before reaching moral awareness, pointing to God’s just and gracious character, supported by the wider testimony of Scripture, as strong reason to trust that they are received into His care. At the same time, Jesus’ command to receive the kingdom like a child calls adults away from pride and self-reliance, and toward humble, dependent trust, reminding us that salvation is not earned but received by grace, just as a child receives from a loving father.
