The Gospel of Mark Part 34

Speaker: Justus Swart

In Mark 10:17–31, Jesus confronts a sincere yet self-assured rich young ruler who believes he has achieved goodness through obedience to the law. Jesus reveals that true goodness belongs to God alone and cannot be earned and that it ultimately relies on total dependence on Him. By instructing the man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, Jesus exposes the deeper issue, not wealth itself, but the man’s misplaced trust and identity in it. Therein Jesus shows us that anything we cling to above God becomes a barrier to following Him fully. This leads to the sobering truth that salvation is impossible through human effort but only possible through God’s grace, while also challenging believers to examine their own hearts, asking not merely what they possess, but what possesses them, and whether they are truly willing to surrender everything to follow Christ.
