The Gospel of Mark (Part 43)

Date: 11 October 2026

Speaker: Justus Swart

In Mark 12:13-17, the religious leaders attempt to trap Jesus with a politically charged question about paying taxes to Caesar, but His response exposes their hypocrisy and reveals a far greater question of allegiance. Jesus acknowledges the legitimate authority of government while reminding His listeners that their ultimate responsibility belongs to God, whose image they bear. The passage challenges us to recognise the dignity of every person as one made in God’s image, to engage responsibly in the political life of our society, and to hold those in authority accountable when they act unjustly. Ultimately, we are called to fulfill our earthly responsibilities without compromising our greater allegiance to God, giving Caesar what belongs to Caesar, but never giving Caesar the place that belongs to God alone.
