Sunday 30 August 2015 – Justus Swart

Jonah 2:1-10; Jonah 3:1-10; Jonah 4:1-11; Jn. 3:16

Many people have reservations about believing the book of Jonah to be a literal account because of the fact that Jonah survived for three days inside of a fish. Their mind gets caught in the physical impossibilities of a human being living inside of a fish. This not just a story that is told to kids who then eventually grow out of believing it. This is a story about God who has immense power and who is not limited to your version of human reality. This is not just a story about a miracle of a man who survived inside of a fish. It is a story about a man who struggled between God’s grace and God’s justice. (more…)

Matt. 5:7-12, 38, 43-44; (Luke 23:46); John 18:1-11; Luke 22:47, 63-65;
Ps. 24:4-5; John 18:19-24;
Eph. 2:14-17; 1 John 4:20-21; Acts 7:54-60;
(Rom. 10:17); (Matt. 7:3-5); (Matt. 6:21)

Jesus practiced all the principles that He taught, they were not separate from Him, but He embodied them fully. Because Jesus was able to do everything He taught others to do, the impact of His testimony was so significant that it changed the whole entire world.

Today we will carry on with the other four beatitudes and draw a parallel to Jesus’ arrest and questioning before Pontius Pilot. The last four focus more on persecution. (more…)

Sun am 22nd March 2015 – Justus Swart

1 Cor. 1:27-28; Matt. 5:1-11; Mark 14:32-42; Mark 14:35; Ps. 34:18; John 3:16;
Luke 22:43-44; Ps. 37:11; (Matt. 26:38)

Jesus literally changed the face of the whole earth with only twelve men. Jesus used these simple, ordinary men, and they were martyred and put to death for it. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are (1 Cor. 1:27-28). It is backward to what we want to hear but that is God’s way. (more…)

Sunday am 26th October 2014 – Justus Swart

(Matt. 13); Ps. 78:1-4; Luke 15:1-2, 11-32; John 5:39-40; (Matt. 25:34-46); (Matt. 9:20-22)

“Do and dare what is right, not swayed by the whim of the moment. Bravely take hold of the real, not dallying now with what might be. Not in the flight of ideas but only in action is freedom. Make up your mind and come out into the tempest of living. God’s command is enough and your faith in Him, to sustain you. Then at last freedom will come, your spirit amid great rejoicing” (Dietrich Bonheoffer).

The purpose of preaching is definitely not to fill your head with ideas but its purpose is to shape us and form us into a people who represent a loving God. Put away your pointing fingers and let your life be a vessel of grace that stands for truth.

The disciples were a bunch of handpicked fishermen, no one really special. Jesus chooses people of no special inclination and yet with the power and grace of God we can do all things through Him who strengthens us. These average guys were around Jesus when He taught the crowds and performed His miracles. Every now and then they had to ask Him to simplify what He said so that they could understand Him. (more…)
